Forgiveness Cleanses The Soul

We have all felt anger, bitterness and resentment from time to time. Perhaps someone betrayed your trust in a relationship or friendship? Or maybe you were bullied or ostracised at school or work? Or even physically abused and assaulted?

But what can we do about these negative and destructive feelings? How do we begin to move forward with our lives and live without pain and anger? Well, as I have mentioned previously within the first chapter, we need to accept our situation before we can do anything else. Once accepted, you need to let go of all the blame (I know this can be hard, especially for those who have felt victimised by others), but in order to move on, you must let things go. If you don’t let go, you will never be able to set yourself free from the feeling of emotional imprisonment.

I speak from experience, both as a counsellor but, more importantly, as someone who held onto so much bitterness and hate that it nearly destroyed my health and almost my life. If you don’t let go and practice forgiveness, you may be the one who pays the ultimate price.

So, what is forgiveness? Generally, forgiveness is letting go of the feelings and thoughts of resentment and bitterness. By forgiving others, the constrictive feelings disperse leaving you with a sense of freedom, hope and peace.

Forgiveness also empowers you and gives you a new sense of purpose; a feeling of compassion and understanding, which will enable you to live without hostility and vengeance. You become free to share simple and delightful pleasures once more, strengthen existing relationships and enrich your connections with others. In essence, you become free!
